Making of - All I have!

The making of a comic always starts from the storyboard:

After which I draw a rough version of the drawings with cool-erase blue-red-green and then ink it using either a ball point pen or a g-pilot pent.

After I am done inking the lines I erase the red pencil lines.

I do the rendering in Prismacolor black... it's a colored pencil but very soft.

Then I scan in the pages in grayscale and open Photoshop.
I place the images in the page and turn the layers to multiply to see through.

I adjust my panels to the correct size. they are drawn with the object too, set to multiply and have a drop shadow.

I use the panels to mask the drawings by selecting them from the path menu and then loading the selection tool and applying a mask.

After that I merge the drawings in one layer, they get back to normal opacity so I have to set it back to multiply, throw an overlay of brown and apply to the drawings' layer.

After that I pick a soft brush and with the panels masked I start painting the background first.
I paint them and texture them in full opacity.

But once I am done I turn the opacity down to 61% (for this particular special it's the value I chose for the Background)
After that I pick a brush with hard edges and color the characters. Flat.
So after I am done with the colors and all the opacities are turned down...

...then I add the shadows.... and the highlights.
One more step to take, which is lettering.
But fundamentally the page is done :D

I hope this answers some of your questions!

Why ♥ your Sketchbook 2

Why ♥ your sketchbook again?

Because you can keep wild animals in it.

You can keep people, ideas, wishes... tickets... you can keep a place and a time.

If you want to be an artist you have to learn to observe and learn from reality. The difference between those who doodles and those who get the jobs is that the ones who get the jobs are observant people.
Being creative and original does not exclude hard practice. Your imagination is a variation of something that already exist in nature so you have to learn the rules really well if you want to break them.

If you break them before you learn them it shows and your artwork will look amateurish.

Drawing from life - objects, people, animals, landscapes - is a good way to train your eye/hand coordination.

You cannot know what something looks like if you don't see it first and learn to reproduce it. If you need to draw the ellipse on an imaginary cup you have to observe what a real ellipse looks like.

If you draw by guessing and you draw what you think things should be like... it will show. Brain getting in the way of hand&eye (who are a prefect married couple) will always create troublesome problems for your art.

People who work in the artistic field will notice, will see all of your technical problems and wonder: can this person understand what he/she sees?

Never take your skills for granted, practice to improve them, try different and new things continuously but never stop going to the zoo to draw animals, even though zoos are sad, scary places, never stop drawing people sleeping on the bus or the train, never stop drawing buildings and perspective.

Drawing is a language if you don't practice that language you will loose the lexicon and the grammar.
Observation is the grammar and creativity is the lexicon.

Observe, draw and imagine. Look twice and draw once. Don't fall in love with your drawings... especially your sketches. Keep them rough and simple, try to capture the gesture, the angle, the motion, try to capture life. Understand the mechanics of the anatomy, understand the motion, feel it.

Only if you understand you can reproduce and be creative. Only if you learn proportions you can push them around and play with shapes. Only if you observe light you will be able to apply color theory.

Everything you think you can create anew it already exist in nature under a different form (cope with it, you are copying already, might as well use good reference!)... the most imaginative fantasy creature, the tallest dragon... they already exist in nature: a piece is attached on an animal, another piece is attached on another one. Our creativity is derivative and cannot live without understanding.

You can draw an eye in one thousand different ways... but it will always be, at the core, an eye.
So an eye, a standard boring eye, is the grammar, light reflects in a certain way because of its shape and the material is made of... and you can derivate your lexicon and make it long, golden, thick, oval, glassy, metallic, whatever... but it will always be an eye in a material you know the existence of.

So deal with it: practice and reality, if you want to be an artist, you cannot do without. :)

Mermaid Illustration - Work In Progress

Before I go ahead and post voice challenges (that I need to find between the comments you guys leave), because I am always in a rush these days - you might have noticed - I can post my second work in progress for the mermaid Illustration.

Currently this is like 80% done and Cat is at his second stage only.
I am also contemplating making them bigger because once I added colors to the values.... the balance didn't work anymore.

I need to have it rest for a while, think of a way to improve it, then I will fix it. :D

Today I am going to a field trip to the museum, the Musée D'Orsay collection is in time. I think they brought over Starry Night by Van Gogh. I can't wait. The Musée D'Orsay is one of my favorite museums in the whole wide world!

Calendar work in progress..

Happy Deepavali, everyone, I stay at home today... let's see if I can create something cool today!

Today I post the last two sketches that I've managed to create for the calendar... after these I have had no time to create any more because school has started already... so if you have any requests or any suggestions let me know. I still want to draw a few.

So today we one image from the future chapters and one from the past.
Enjoy.

calendar work in progress...Martin and Pea

A little bit of Martin and Pea, today, for our calendar sketches.
One was basically feature in a chapter cover and the other one... well... you'll see! ha ha ha.

It's time for me to start coloring these little thing, it's almost Halloween already, right?

Otherwise the calendar will never get done on time. :D

calendar work in progress... Pifo and Rose.

I did mention I had something in mind for Rose as well. I wanted to draw something dainty but sexy so here she is... I love Rose she's round and has big eyes with long lashes.
So for Pifo's world I am more into the previous Pif' for the simple reason that it gives out a very cool silhouette, almost like an ink spot. Eventually I had to put the "I don't enjoy coVn" one because it's a crucial moment in Pifo's life! Ha ha ha.
But we'll see maybe I'll draw more of Pifo as an adult like he is now, on the first page of chapter 17 (so cuuute!) XDDD

Calendar work in progress... shallalas!

So... have you ever wonder what the Shallalas do when they don't go around shouting "Doctooooor" or "Little Westleyyyy" or "Ourssssss"....

Well, of course, as you can see, their mind is still unidirectional but they are hormones so what do you expect? ha ha ha.

So unless they have a nice afternoon at home....

Maybe they train hard to achieve their goal, because they believe that dream do come true with much effort....

As we know, right now, the poor things are suffering because of the strike.
So this would be their take on the whole thing.

What do we want? Little Westley! When do we want it? NOW!

calendar work in progress...

So tonight get ready for update! :D
The flash version of the chapter will be up at around 8pm Singapore time.

Also I will fix chapter 15 with the correction to the last typos and will put it for download in the download section.

I just wanted to say that I finished compiling the volume and am currently working the freetalk. Are there any question you would like for me to address in these freetalk at the end of the volume? Otherwise I'll just talk about the usual games and the fan art received :D

Also I found the missing Foxy and Lio that I was supposed to upload yesterday. I did not rename it twice... I simply misplaced it LOL.

The poll to pick the design of the calendar is still up.
Let me know which version you would like to have for download and print.

calendar work in progress...

I must have saved one of the Lio and Foxy wrong.
No time to rescan now so here we go with Kane.

No wonder I had two of the same image called 7 and 8. I have to be more careful with the "save as".

anyways tomorrow is release day so I can take time to scan the extra Lio and Foxy to show again on the following update. :)

Okay, so, the semester starts today again.
It's a very heavy semester but I will try to run the classes as workshops - I found them to be more efficient than just vomiting information and then assign homework... beside what homework? The year 2 students don't even have time to go to the toilet this semester.

Neither do I... ha ha ha. Ops, too much information.

Anyway, wish me luck! I start a brand new class tomorrow and I haven't even gotten my art supplies yet. Maybe I could perform a few magic tricks! ha ha ha.

Alright, time to go get my coffee and print the rosters. See you later! :D

calendar work in progress: kane and castalia.

revisiting certain moments makes me nostalgic *_*
how about you?

So how is the sound hunt going? Did you find an actor or a voice actor whose voice inspire you?

Do you want me to start with who I have in mind? XDDD
Not fair, I already proposed the shallalas!

Anyways... the semester starts tomorrow. I had ordered art supplies with the school two weeks before I left for Italy... 5 weeks after I still haven't received anything but a lot of paperwork and not in the efficient way because the whole purchase system has changed.

But this reinforce my theory that laws and rules should not be retroactive except in extreme cases.

Happy sunday everyone today I will: clean the kitchen, sweep my floor, do another laundry, prepare the next update fixing all the typos.

By the way if you are an ipad user and you like this apps called Flipboard you can follow the blog and the comic via filpboard as well.
I am still trying to device an ideal way to show up on smart phones and tablets.
Very very soon I will.

calendar work in progress: Wes and Kes

How about today for the calendar work in progress I show you Wes and Kes?

So I will add some extra drawings of the "future" just like suggested under the previous post :) it should be fun.

How much fun am I having drawing skinny skinny legs XDDD.

But now that I think about it I have not yet decided on the layout.

Last year I made a desk calendar. What kind of calendar would you prefer this year? Horizontal or vertical?

Kane and Castalia PTO

TPB goes PTO.
I thought I'd show you the sketch of the work in progress.
Since the mermaid illustration will take me a while longer...
I might go directly to the next topic and start drawing the next illustrations.

So the second one was kane and castalia as phantom and christine.
I tried a first rendering but I don't like it.
I am seriously thinking of pen and inking this one or do more than one version.

Mermaid prettier WIP

Okay here's a prettier work in progress.
I've already started on Cat as well.
And I was thinking... : oooh, she looks like a pwetty fish, no wonder Cat likes her, cuz Cats like fishes!

Okay, lame joke has this monday begin for me with no coffee... so I shall go get some.
Help me caffeine, this week I shall be submerged to, unlike our mermaid, not by water but by papers!!!!
